Theme 1: Conflict

  1. Feud: A long-lasting argument between two people or groups.
  2. The Feud in Romeo and Juliet was between the Montagues and the Capulets (the two families of Romeo and Juliet).
  3. The feud is important because; If there was no feud there would be no problem with Romeo and Juliet being in love. They would never have killed themselves. There wouldn’t be much of a story.
  4. Quotes: “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny” Prologue. “My master is the great rich Capulet; and if you be not of the house of Montague, I pray, come crush a cup of wine.” Peter. “My only love sprung from my only hate, Too early seen unknown and, known too late.” Juliet
  5. The Irish; Catholics and Protestants (The Troubles). The civil war between North and South America about slavery (still protesters today).
  6. I do not think Romeo and Juliet should have obeyed their parents and continued the feud. As a younger generation, they were able to overcome their families differences something their parents and most likely grandparents couldn’t. By not obeying their parents they managed to end the troubles at the cost of their lives.
  7. Right at the bottom of Romeo and Juliet’s death is the feud between their families. This could be traced back generations but in the story, it’s their parents who continue hating each other and they force this on their children. If their parents had been able to settle their differences they would not have lost their children.
  8. There is a conflict between Juliet and her mother at the beginning of the play. Lady Capulet wants Juliet to marry Paris and Juliet does not want to unless she likes him. An example of this is when Juliet says; “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move; But no more deep will I endart my eye
